The San Francisco Giants fired manager Bob Melvin on Monday after two seasons and a 161-163 record.

Melvin, 63, missed the playoffs both years and was let go with one year remaining on his contract.

General manager Buster Posey picked up Melvin’s 2026 option on July 1 but opted to shift gears after the team faded to an 81-81 finish.

“After meeting with ownership, I met with Bob today to inform him of my decision,” Posey said in a statement released on Monday. “On behalf of the organization, I want to express my appreciation to Bob for his dedication, professionalism, and class. I wish him all the best.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team. The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.”

The Giants finished third in the National League West, 12 games behind the division-winning Los Angeles Dodgers and nine back of the playoff-bound San Diego Padres. They were two games out of the NL’s final wild-card spot.

San Francisco briefly tied the rival Dodgers for first place on June 13 at 41-29. But despite acquiring All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox on June 15, the Giants went 9-25 from July 12 to Aug. 22 to fall out of contention. They lost 15 of 17 at home during that disastrous stretch.

Melvin owns a career record of 1,678-1,588 in 22 seasons as skipper of the Seattle Mariners (2003-04), Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-09), Oakland Athletics (2011-21), Padres (2022-23) and Giants. He was named Manager of the Year in the National League in 2007 and the American League in 2012 and 2018.
