And it was no different for comedian and actor Adam Devine. <em>Righteous Gemstones <\/em>star embarked on quite the health journey in 2024, including putting on 25 pounds of \u201csympathy weight\u201d during his wife\u2019s pregnancy and then becoming a first-time Dad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The life experiences gave him the wake-up call he needed to refocus on his health. With his newfound role as a parent, Devine\u2019s health journey became less about looking camera-ready and more about showing up for his family. He lost those 25 pounds with common sense strategies\u2014and not any of the fad diets that took social media by storm.<\/p>\n<p>During a conversation with <a href=\"https:\/\/myfitnesspal.app.link\/HeTQt6H3PPb\">MyFitnessPal<\/a>, Devine revealed his biggest health lessons from 2024, and how he\u2019ll be taking those learnings into 2025 to create the happiest and healthiest (and funniest) New Year yet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-1-rotisserie-chicken-is-the-mvp\"><strong>Lesson 1: Rotisserie Chicken is the MVP<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Devine has a special relationship with the humble rotisserie chicken. \u201cMy wife thinks I\u2019m a lunatic because I will buy three chickens at the beginning of the week,\u201d he says. \u201cI love the dirty bird!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s definitely onto something with this convenient, high-protein staple. It helps him hit his nutrition goals without spending hours in the kitchen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One reason why this works for him is that he switches up the way he serves it so it doesn\u2019t get boring. \u201cThe first day I\u2019ll eat it with buffalo sauce or a light ranch, but the next day I&#8217;ll shred it and put it in a burrito with a low carb wrap. Sometimes my wife will pop broccoli and sweet potatoes in the oven as sides for the third day,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>Rotisserie chicken is proof that convenience and health can coexist. And it doesn\u2019t have to be rotisserie chicken\u2014a big batch of lentils or some baked tofu could also be the protein-packed base of many meals throughout the week. Plan ahead like Devine, and you\u2019ll always have a delicious, nutritious meal ready to go.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-2-just-because-it-s-high-protein-doesn-t-mean-you-should-eat-it\"><strong>Lesson 2: Just Because it\u2019s High Protein Doesn\u2019t Mean You Should Eat It<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If social media trends can be trusted, 2024 has been a big year for eating more (and <em>more<\/em>) protein. Research shows this macronutrient can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jomes.org\/journal\/view.html?doi=10.7570\/jomes20028\">support a weight loss journey<\/a> in a number of ways, including promoting satiety. But Devine learned the hard way that not all \u201chigh-protein\u201d snacks are created equal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While filming <em>The Righteous Gemstones<\/em>, a co-star introduced him to homemade high-protein balls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were delicious and small, so I was eating three or four a day,\u201d he says. \u201cI had no idea how calorie dense they were.\u201d That is, until he looked up the ingredients and figured out the nutrition information for each little protein ball. They turned out to have about 300 calories each.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTracking my food helps me actually know what I\u2019m eating so I don\u2019t accidentally eat 1,000 calories of homemade protein balls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lesson? Even healthy-sounding high-protein snacks may cause you to overshoot your goals if you\u2019re not paying close attention.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-3-drinking-an-old-fashioned-is-like-eating-a-candy-bar\"><strong>Lesson 3: Drinking an Old Fashioned is Like Eating a Candy Bar<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s not uncommon to sip two or three drinks over a night out with friends. But most people wouldn\u2019t eat three candy bars in a row.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Devine\u2019s drink of choice is a classic old fashioned. It was only after getting familiar with the calorie count of bourbon and rye that he started to understand what a splurge the cocktail could be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy vice is a nice cocktail like an old fashioned\u2014although now I realize that\u2019s like drinking a candy bar,\u201d he admits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Indulgences like this are essential for striking a balance and building a diet pattern that\u2019s actually sustainable long term.&nbsp; But it\u2019s important to be aware of them and recognize their impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned it\u2019s all about balance,\u201d Devine said. Moral of the story? As Devine found out, that includes the way you look at food and fitness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince becoming a dad, the hardest trade-off for me is spending time with my son versus going to the gym,\u201d Devine explains. \u201cThat\u2019s what makes healthier eating all the more important because I will always choose hanging out with Beau.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prioritizing nutrition allows him to maintain his energy and stay present for his family. For Devine, eating well isn\u2019t just about looking good on screen anymore\u2014it\u2019s about feeling good and being the best version of himself for his son.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-5-even-a-loose-wedding-ring-can-boost-motivation\"><strong>Lesson 5: Even a Loose Wedding Ring Can Boost Motivation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Devine understands the importance of non-scale victories and taps into them for motivation. Over the past year, he\u2019s noticed his wedding ring becoming loose and his face looking leaner on screen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a whole new wardrobe although it\u2019s outdated since I haven\u2019t been this lean in years,\u201d he jokes. It\u2019s these everyday wins that keep him motivated. \u201cMy biggest wins aren\u2019t the numbers on the scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-6-how-you-eat-impacts-how-you-feel\"><strong>Lesson 6: How You Eat Impacts How You Feel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Devine learned firsthand how diet affects both physical and mental well-being. \u201cWith the extra weight, I felt and looked bloated, so it was uncomfortable,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI just didn\u2019t feel like myself.\u201d Now, eating healthier has helped him feel more energized and confident.<\/p>\n<p>When you prioritize nutritious foods, you\u2019re not just fueling your body\u2014you\u2019re supporting your overall sense of well-being. Parenting requires tons of energy, and now Devine has more than he\u2019s had in years thanks to the way he\u2019s eating. It\u2019s all about balance. \u201cLife is fun,\u201d he notes. \u201cYou should have that birthday cake. Enjoy it and then get back on your goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, at his annual family reunions, he indulges in all his favorites, including cookies, steaks, and beer. It\u2019s an occasion he looks forward to and wants to enjoy it to the fullest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI usually \u2018let it fly\u2019 for this particular event,\u201d he says. \u201cLast year, when I got home, I weighed myself and saw I had gained 8 lbs in one weekend! But it\u2019s OK to have a day or weekend off the routine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the approach he\u2019s taking into 2025: Reset and move on. Guilt doesn\u2019t serve you, but rebooting your routine does. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to live!\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-8-knowing-your-protein-goal-matters\"><strong>Lesson 8: Knowing Your Protein Goal Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When he\u2019s not celebrating some special occasion, Devine\u2019s everyday meals are centered around hitting his protein goals (without blowing past his calorie goals). Breakfast might include a \u201cbetter-for-you\u201d protein-packed bagel, lunch is often grilled or rotisserie chicken on a vinaigrette-dressed salad, and dinner is typically salmon with broccoli, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always trying to find ways to get more protein.\u201d And his love of rotisserie chicken aside, it isn\u2019t all chicken all the time. Devine shared some of his favorite go-to recipes, too\u2014including turkey chili and a breakfast quesadilla\u2014now available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/myfitnesspal.app.link\/HeTQt6H3PPb\">MyFitnessPal app<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-9-go-to-snacks-are-a-must\"><strong>Lesson 9: Go-to Snacks Are a Must<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Everyone needs snacks around for those hangry moments. Having the right ones for him on hand helps Devine avoid less nutritious options and stay on track with his health goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His current favorites include cherry tomatoes, apples, and protein bars that clock in around 200 calories or less. \u201cHaving convenient snacks ready to go makes it so much easier to stay on track,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Devine\u2019s tip? Find snacks you genuinely enjoy and keep them within reach for when hunger strikes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-10-tracking-makes-health-goals-achievable\"><strong>Lesson 10: Tracking Makes Health Goals Achievable<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For Devine, food tracking has been a game changer. \u201cTracking my food helps me actually know what I\u2019m eating,\u201d he says. \u201cJust knowing where you stand allows for slip-ups, setbacks, vacations, or celebrations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By bringing awareness to what you eat, tracking helps you stay accountable and make progress over time. It\u2019s not about perfection\u2014it\u2019s about balance and consistency.<\/p>\n<p>Based on everything he\u2019s learned this past year, he set simple and sustainable health goals for 2025. This year, he plans to focus on eating healthy and drinking less alcohol without beating himself up over a cocktail or cookie.
