{"id":3290,"date":"2025-02-11T16:49:09","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T16:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/friscotimes.org\/?p=3290"},"modified":"2025-02-11T16:49:09","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T16:49:09","slug":"trump-metals-tariff-canada-mexico-html","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/friscotimes.org\/?p=3290","title":{"rendered":"Nations Denounce Trump Tariff on Metals and Warn of Retaliation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Nations targeted by President Trump\u2019s tariffs on steel and aluminum decried the measures as unfair Tuesday and threatened to retaliate in a growing trade dispute that threatens to further roil economic markets and strain the United States\u2019 relations with major allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, the United States\u2019 biggest supplier of both metals, described Mr. Trump\u2019s 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports as \u201cunjustified\u201d and \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trudeau said he hoped to avert the imposition of the tariffs \u2014 which will not go into effect until March 12 \u2014 by highlighting their \u201cnegative impacts on Americans and Canadians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He added that Canada would \u201calso be working with our international partners and friends\u201d to pressure the Trump administration. Asked whether he was ready to respond with countertariffs, Mr. Trudeau said Canada \u201cwill stand up strongly and firmly if we need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">European countries also warned of retaliation in response to Mr. Trump\u2019s tariffs. Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, called the levies \u201cunjustified.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Leaders in Mexico said the tariffs were \u201cunjustifiable\u201d and risked undermining the economic integration of the North American market that was forged over the past two generations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Noting that the United States has a trade surplus with Mexico in steel and aluminum, Marcelo Ebrard, the country\u2019s secretary of the economy, said he planned to appeal to Mr. Trump\u2019s common sense to try to fend off the tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe take his word for it \u2014 common sense \u2014 not shooting ourselves in the foot, not destroying what we have built in 40 years,\u201d Mr. Ebrard told reporters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s announcement of the tariffs on Monday took leaders in Canada and Mexico, the United States\u2019 biggest trading partners, especially by surprise. Last month, the president threatened 25 percent tariffs on all imports from both nations, prompting them to warn of retaliation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But a trade war was averted at the last minute when Mr. Trump and the leaders of both countries reached separate deals that yielded a 30-day postponement of the tariffs last week. Both agreements involve beefing up security at the borders the United States shares with Mexico and Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The sudden imposition of tariffs on Canada\u2019s steel and aluminum weeks before the end of the reprieve left political and business leaders in the country feeling whipsawed. Canada\u2019s economy is much smaller than the United States\u2019 and would suffer significantly from the tariffs. It now faces a repeat of the down-to-the-wire negotiations that have dominated news coverage in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tariffs are likely to deepen Canada\u2019s mistrust of the Trump administration, heighten feelings of betrayal among Canadians and further fuel discussions about the need to strengthen ties to countries other than the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump revealed that he was prepared to impose 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States on Sunday while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Canada was the biggest supplier of steel to the United States last year, followed by Brazil and Mexico. It is also a major supplier of aluminum to the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Canada\u2019s steel industry, which employs <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/canadiansteel.ca\/skills-jobs\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">23,000 people<\/a>, exports almost all of its products to the United States. There is little demand for Canadian steel in other markets, which are increasingly dominated by China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The aluminum sector, which employs <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/aluminium.ca\/en\/the-industry\/#:~:text=The%20industry%20supports%20over%209,000,of%20over%20C$12%20billion.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">9,000 people<\/a> in Canada, is more competitive globally, though the United States is its major buyer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During his first term, Mr. Trump levied tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from all over the world, angering Canada, Mexico and other allies. He eventually exempted major steel-producing countries like Brazil, South Korea and Australia in exchange for quotas limiting their exports to the United States. He removed the barriers on steel and aluminum for Canada and Mexico with the signing of a revised trade agreement among the three countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This time, Mr. Trump has laced tariff threats against Canada with talk of annexing the country and turning it into the 51st state. While the government of Prime Minister Trudeau initially dismissed Mr. Trump\u2019s comment as a joke, he told business leaders on Friday that he regarded the threat as real.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump, in an interview with Fox News on Sunday, said that he was serious about annexing Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, Mr. Trudeau pushed back against Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is a moment of pride,\u201d Mr. Trudeau said, speaking in Paris where he was attending a conference on artificial intelligence. \u201cThis is a moment of pulling together. This is a moment for Canada to be solid in our identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mexico was the third largest supplier of steel to the United States in 2024, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A spokesman for the Mexican steel trade association, Canacero, said it would wait to assess the impact on the industry, which is concentrated in northern Mexico and supplies steel for everything from cars to washing machines to construction materials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Mr. Trump imposed tariffs in his first term \u2014 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum \u2014 Mexico retaliated with countertariffs on key American products, including pork, apples, cheese, cranberries, bourbon whiskey and Harley Davidson motorcycles, according to Valeria Moy, the general director of the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tariffs were lifted about a year later with the signing of the revised free trade agreement among the United States, Canada and Mexico.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the short-lived tariffs on steel and aluminum did not lead to significant gains for American manufacturers, Ms. Moy said that it was not surprising that Mr. Trump was considering turning to them again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt represents a win that\u2019s easy for Trump to communicate,\u201d Ms. Moy said. \u201cIt benefits \u2014 in the short term \u2014 an industry that\u2019s become emblematic in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Brazil exported $4.5 billion worth of steel to the United States last year. The United States was by far the largest international market for Brazilian steel, but that represented only about 11 percent of Brazil\u2019s steel sales, most of which are domestic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The last time Mr. Trump implemented tariffs against steel imports, he largely exempted Brazil. Experts believed at the time that because the United States had a trade surplus with Brazil, Mr. Trump did not see it necessary to target the country with tariffs, said Carla Beni, an economist who tracks international trade at the Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Getulio Vargas, a university in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tariffs on Brazilian steel could backfire on the United States, Ms. Beni said.
