Since the advent of mainstream use of artificial intelligence, people have been worried about how the nascent technology could affect their jobs\u2014or make them lose their living altogether. But actors and other celebrities have a different concern: that the use of AI could steal their image, likeness, and personality.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

Nicolas Cage, the 60-year-old film star who starred in \u201cNational Treasure,\u201d \u201cFace\/Off,\u201d and the upcoming highly anticipated horror film \u201cLonglegs,\u201d is especially worried about AI\u2019s lasting impact on Hollywood and acting\u2014even beyond his lifetime. <\/p>\n

During a recent interview<\/a> with The New Yorker, <\/em>Cage had to slip out to get a digital scan done for a show he\u2019s working on for production purposes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have to put me in a computer and match my eye color and change\u2014I don\u2019t know. They\u2019re just going to steal my body and do whatever they want with it via digital AI,\u201d Cage said. \u201cI\u2019m terrified of [AI]. I\u2019ve been very vocal about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

AI\u2019s influence on Hollywood<\/h2>\n

Cage isn\u2019t the only actor who\u2019s spoken out against the use of AI in film production. <\/p>\n

Last October, \u201cForrest Gump\u201d star Tom Hanks warned his fans that an ad for a dental plan used his image and voice without his permission and was created using AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBEWARE!! There\u2019s a video out there promoting some dental plan with an AI version of me,\u201d Hanks wrote over a screenshot of the computer-generated image of himself from the video on Instagram<\/a>. \u201cI have nothing to do with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The late Robin Williams\u2019 voice has also been used for various purposes, which his daughter Zelda Williams has called \u201cdisturbing<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

Scarlett Johansson\u2019s voice was also allegedly stolen for use as an AI personal assistant voice\u2014although OpenAI denied the accusation. <\/p>\n

And British actor and author Stephen Fry\u2014who famously narrated the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d audiobook series\u2014has also opened up about his experience with having his identity digitally cloned without his permission.\u00a0<\/p>\n

AI \u201ccould therefore have me read anything from a call to storm Parliament to hard porn, all without my knowledge and without my permission,\u201d Fry, told an audience at the CogX Festival in London last September. \u201cAnd this was done without my knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n

The list of unauthorized use of actors\u2019 voices and images goes on. <\/p>\n

It was one of the strongholds behind the 118-day labor strike by the Screen Actors Guild \u2013 American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), which ended last November. <\/p>\n

Now, movie studios are required to get permission from actors to use their images in AI-generated materials and pay performers whenever their digital doubles appear on screen, under the new labor agreement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But actors, including Cage, still have their doubts about the use of AI in film production\u2014and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cage said in his New Yorker <\/em>interview: \u201cAnd it makes me wonder, you know, where will the truth of the artists end up? Is it going to be replaced? Is it going to be transmogrified? Where\u2019s the heartbeat going to be?\u201d<\/p>\n

The long-term effects of AI in Hollywood<\/h2>\n

The fear of replacement has also been particularly strong among voice actors, who could face a major reckoning as AI-generated voices become more sophisticated. <\/p>\n

These synthetic voices save studios time and money without having to hire professional voice actors for production, but they\u2019re bad news for workers. <\/p>\n

Indeed, AI stands to adversely affect nearly 204,000 Hollywood jobs during the next three years, according to a January CVL Economics report<\/a> based on a survey of 300 entertainment industry leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Three-fourths of respondents said AI could eliminate, reduce, or consolidate jobs at their company. The most endangered roles are sound engineers, voice actors, concept artists, and other entry-level workers. <\/p>\n

Visual effect and post-production work are also vulnerable to AI.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entertainment industries are in a period of significant uncertainty, where the nature of work is rapidly\u2014and in many cases, profoundly\u2014changing at an unprecedented rate,\u201d according to the report. <\/p>\n

\u201cCreative industry leaders are largely embracing GenAI technology, and most recognize that operational benefits in the future will come at a cost to many creative workers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not only do actors and other entertainment workers stand to live with the effects of AI\u2014but die with them, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean what are you going to do with my body and my face when I\u2019m dead?\u201d Cage questioned. \u201cI don\u2019t want you to do anything with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
