Its rate of attack on Israel is already slowing down, think tank says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Iran has launched hundreds of missiles<\/strong> at Israel in response to its expansive air strikes, though not as many as expected. Meanwhile, Israel has targeted Iran\u2019s missiles as well as its ability to launch them. The Institute for the Study of War said Iran\u2019s rate of attack is already slowing down from its initial barrages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The conflict between Israel and Iran escalated over the weekend as both sides appeared to expand their range of targets, including energy infrastructure. <\/p>\n<p>But despite Israel\u2019s aggressive air strikes and even suggestions that they are aimed at the regime itself, Iran has not responded in kind, launching fewer missiles than expected and at a declining rate.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because Israel has targeted Iran\u2019s stockpile of missiles as well as its ability to launch them, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe frequency of Iran\u2019s missile barrages targeting Israel has decreased since the start of the Israeli air campaign on June 12, which suggests that Israeli strikes are impacting the rate at which Iran can launch missiles at Israel,\u201d ISW researchers wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understandingwar.org\/backgrounder\/iran-update-special-report-june-15-2025-morning-edition\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.understandingwar.org\/backgrounder\/iran-update-special-report-june-15-2025-morning-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assessment on Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday and Saturday, Iran conducted six waves of attacks using 100 to 200 missiles, ISW estimated. But since Saturday, Iran has only conducted two waves of attacks using 35 to 40 missiles each.<\/p>\n<p>Using the high end of each ISW estimate, that means the initial waves averaged about 33 missiles each, while the subsequent waves have averaged 20 missiles.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understandingwar.org\/backgrounder\/iran-update-special-report-june-14-2025-morning-edition\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.understandingwar.org\/backgrounder\/iran-update-special-report-june-14-2025-morning-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ISW\u2019s analysis<\/a> of the Israel-Iran conflict noted that Tehran had reportedly planned to launch 1,000 ballistic missiles at Israel in response to Israeli attacks. But ISW\u2019s tally at the time put the total at just 200.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran has used significantly fewer munitions in its response to Israel than originally planned because the IDF destroyed and damaged missile launchers and silos that Iran planned to use to retaliate against Israel,\u201d ISW wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Before the current conflict started, U.S. and Israeli estimates put Iran\u2019s stockpile of missiles at about 2,000, but not all of them have enough range to reach Israel, according to ISW.<\/p>\n<p>If that number is accurate, then Iran\u2019s current rate of missile launches at Israel may not be sustainable for much longer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption>Israel\u2019s \u201cIron Dome\u201d air defense system responds to incoming Iranian ballistic missiles as seen from Hebron on Sunday.<\/figcaption><div class=\"image-credit\">Amer Shallodi\u2014Anadolu\/Getty Images<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>To be sure, Iran has inflicted significant damage and caused fatalities, but Israel\u2019s Iron Dome missile-defense system has been intercepting many attacks, limiting the effectiveness of Iran\u2019s retaliation.<\/p>\n<p>Other analysts have previously noted that Iran has few viable military options, and its overall capabilities have been severely degraded by Israel.<\/p>\n<p>That could force Tehran to look for ways to retaliate that don\u2019t involve launching missiles. An Iranian lawmaker said Saturday that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/iranian-lawmaker-says-closure-of-key-strait-of-hormuz-under-consideration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closure of the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=61002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">critical choke point<\/a>\u00a0in the global energy trade, was under serious consideration. The equivalent of 21% of global petroleum liquids consumption, or about 21 million barrels per day, flows through the strait.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Israel is continuing its own barrage and expanding its targets to include Iran\u2019s energy infrastructure. After wiping out much of Tehran\u2019s top military leadership as well as pummeling nuclear and military facilities, Israel has hit fuel supplies and the South Pars gas field, considered the world\u2019s largest reservoir of natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>The Pars field is critical to Iran\u2019s domestic energy production, and more than 90% of Iran\u2019s electricity is generated by gas-powered plants, according to ISW.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisruptions to Iran\u2019s natural gas production will likely worsen the country\u2019s ongoing energy crisis and lead to more widespread electricity blackouts, however,\u201d ISW said on Sunday. \u201cIranians have previously protested against the regime in response to energy shortages.
