Here are six of the biggest surprises so far:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1-red-sox-trade-rafael-devers-to-the-giants\" class=\" uppercase break-words\">1. Red Sox Trade Rafael Devers to the Giants<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s no shock the Red Sox \u2014 who never seem to tire of making poor decisions or smearing franchise icons on their way out \u2014 decided they <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/david-ortiz-takes-shot-at-rafael-devers-as-red-sox-drama-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">didn\u2019t want to build around Rafael Devers<\/a> barely two years after signing him to a 10-year deal. But dealing him to the Giants in mid-June qualifies as one of the most stunning moves in recent memory.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a no-lose proposition for the Giants, who finally landed the power hitter they could never lure via free agency. It might also work for the Red Sox, who have top prospects Roman Anthony and\/or Marcelo Meyer primed to replace Devers as the face of the franchise \u2014 at least until Boston sours on them, too.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2-cal-raleighs-historic-power-surge\" class=\" uppercase break-words\">2. But Raleigh has already belted 31 homers with a week left in June \u2014 putting him on pace to not only obliterate Salvador Perez\u2019s single-season record for catchers (48 in 2021), but possibly to threaten Aaron Judge\u2019s American League record of 62 home runs. And yes, he\u2019s doing this as a catcher.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-pete-crow-armstrongs-40\/40-or-50\/50-chase\" class=\" uppercase break-words\">3. Pete Crow-Armstrong\u2019s 40\/40 (or 50\/50?) Mandatory Credit: Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images<!-- --> <!-- --> <\/span><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p><\/p>\n<section id=\"section-5\">\n<p>Jeremy Pe\u00f1a\u2019s rise into a top-of-the-order star deserves mention, but the most impressive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6436591\/2025\/06\/19\/cubs-pete-crow-armstrong-offense-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breakout belongs to Pete Crow-Armstrong<\/a>. Once pegged as a defensive specialist, Crow-Armstrong has smashed 21 homers and swiped 23 bases \u2014 the fastest any Cubs player has reached 20\/20.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also proof of the long-term impact of trades. The Cubs acquired him from the Mets in 2021 for Javier B\u00e1ez, who underwhelmed for three-plus seasons before\u2026<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-javier-baez-is-good-again\" class=\" uppercase break-words\">4. But after undergoing hip surgery last summer, B\u00e1ez has been reborn \u2014 flirting with a .300 average and posting an .800 OPS for the first time since 2021 while starring for the best team in baseball.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5-parity-rules-mlb--for-better-or-worse\" class=\" uppercase break-words\">5. Parity Rules MLB \u2014 for Better or Worse<\/h2>\n<p>Rob Manfred and his band of salary cap-chasing executives will never admit it, but parity has arrived in baseball. Only one team \u2014 the mid-market Tigers \u2014 is on a 100-win pace, and 22 clubs are within five games of a playoff berth.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago, there were four teams on a 100-win pace and 23 teams within five games of a playoff spot. Some of this reflects playoff expansion and contenders like the Dodgers realizing October is all that matters. Still, the state of competition is far better than the doom-and-gloom Manfred and company will claim over the next 16 months.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"6-except-in-colorado\" class=\" uppercase break-words\">6. Mandatory Credit: Brad Mills-Imagn Images<!-- --> <!-- --> <\/span><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"section-9\">\n<p>The Rockies are famously insular \u2014 and they should be bad \u2014 but <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/are-the-2025-colorado-rockies-the-worst-mlb-team-ever-the-numbers-say-yes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how are they this bad?<\/a> Colorado is threatening to surpass the 2024 White Sox as the losingest team of the modern era. At 18-60, the Rockies are on pace to finish 37-125, which would \u201ctop\u201d the White Sox by four games.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s hope for\u2026slightly less embarrassment. Colorado has won half its games this month.
