They\u2019re meant for family, friends, and conversation. These simple strategies will help you enjoy both without overdoing it.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-practice-mindful-eating-techniques\">Practice Mindful Eating Techniques<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Take small portions<\/strong> of multiple dishes. Pick a few favorites and try a few spoonfuls of each. \u201cIf you really enjoy something, you can go back later for more but make conscious decisions,\u201d Waanders says.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve got a full plate, Waanders recommends <strong>separating yourself from where the food is <\/strong>and taking a seat at a table or outside. This can help ease the temptation of constantly going back for another helping.<\/p>\n<p>While you eat, talk to<strong> <\/strong>other potluck attendees. \u201cThis can help slow your pace and make it easier to notice&nbsp; our hunger and fullness cues more appropriately,\u201d Waanders says. Not only that, but talking leads to memories made and good fun.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-build-your-plate\">Build Your Plate<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to taking small portions of each dish, you should also be mindful of what foods you\u2019re eating. According to Waanders, your potluck plate should be made up of about half vegetables, and half protein and carbohydrates.<\/p>\n<p>Look for:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vegetables<\/li>\n<li>Fruit<\/li>\n<li>Lean meats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since they may be higher in fat and sodium, take smaller portions of:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Foods covered in cheese<\/li>\n<li>Creamy dishes or dips<\/li>\n<li>Processed meats&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-track-smart\">Track Smart<\/h3>\n<p>Tracking food during a potluck can be a little tricky. Instead of worrying about doing it at the party, snap a photo of your plate and do the logging later. Listen to your body! \u201cTake your time and stop when you start to feel full,\u201d Waanders says. \u201cYou can always go back for more later!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bottom-line\">The Bottom Line<\/h2>\n<p>Potlucks don\u2019t have to be a fearful food event\u2014they actually offer a unique opportunity to practice mindful eating in a social setting.
