{"id":5646,"date":"2025-08-15T14:58:55","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T14:58:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/friscotimes.org\/?p=5646"},"modified":"2025-08-18T04:44:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T04:44:06","slug":"steve-jobs-first-silicon-valley-boss-turned-down-an-offer-to-buy-a-third-of-apple-for-50000-today-his-share-would-be-worth-nearly-1-trillion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/friscotimes.org\/?p=5646","title":{"rendered":"Steve Jobs\u2019 first Silicon Valley boss turned down an offer to buy a third of Apple for $50,000\u2014today, his share would be worth nearly $1 trillion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Many people may be kicking themselves for not buying Bitcoin or investing in Nvidia stock sooner\u2014but few will have missed out on a bigger deal than Atari cofounder Nolan Bushnell, the first Silicon Valley boss of the late Steve Jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A young Jobs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/technology\/how-ataris-nolan-bushnell-turned-down-steve-jobs-offer-of-a-third-of-apple-at-50000-20150324-1m62cm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/technology\/how-ataris-nolan-bushnell-turned-down-steve-jobs-offer-of-a-third-of-apple-at-50000-20150324-1m62cm.html\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">offered the<\/a> gaming mogul an eye-popping deal: buy a third of Apple for just $50,000. What might come as a shock to many is that Bushnell turned it down.<\/p>\n<p>Apple has since grown into a $3.1 trillion sensation with over a billion iPhones sitting in people\u2019s back pockets, and over 100 million Mac users worldwide\u2014and if Bushnell had taken the deal, his cut would have made him $1 trillion today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But Bushnell isn\u2019t crying over the missed opportunity<s>\u00a0<\/s><\/h2>\n<p>Bushnell first witnessed Jobs\u2019 potential as a businessman in the 1970s, when the college dropout joined Atari as a technician and games designer before moving into entrepreneurship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jobs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/technology\/how-ataris-nolan-bushnell-turned-down-steve-jobs-offer-of-a-third-of-apple-at-50000-20150324-1m62cm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/technology\/how-ataris-nolan-bushnell-turned-down-steve-jobs-offer-of-a-third-of-apple-at-50000-20150324-1m62cm.html\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">was an<\/a> essential engineer \u201csolving problems in the field\u201d at Atari, Bushnell recalled, but his leadership mentality also meant some tension at the office. The Atari cofounder strategically employed Jobs during nightshifts, knowing that Wozniak would also join and help out on projects like the brick-breaking game \u201cBreakout.\u201d But Jobs would also barge into his office to tell Bushnell that the other employees weren\u2019t good at soldering, offering to instruct them. Bushnell recognized that Jobs was a genius\u2014albiet, a complicated one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a difficult person,\u201d Bushnell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-03-23\/the-godfather-of-video-games\/6339986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-03-23\/the-godfather-of-video-games\/6339986\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">told <em>ABC News<\/em><\/a> in 2015. \u201cHe was very smart. Often he was the smartest person in the room, and he would tell everybody that. It\u2019s generally not a good social dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But years later, the tech pioneer isn\u2019t quietly simmering over his choice to reject the offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could have owned a third of Apple computer for $50,000, and I turned it down,\u201d Bushnell said in the interview. \u201cI\u2019ve got a wonderful family, I\u2019ve got a great wife, my life is wonderful. I\u2019m not sure that if I had been uber, uber, uber rich that I\u2019d have had all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Bushnell even thinks Apple may not have been so successful if he had taken the deal. And his potential payout may not have soared to that trillion-dollar height.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still an Apple fan and you know I think that hindsight is 20\/20,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/computing\/apple\/-walking-away-from-apple-helped-make-it-great-says-atari-founder-1179588\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/computing\/apple\/-walking-away-from-apple-helped-make-it-great-says-atari-founder-1179588\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">he told<\/a> <em>Tech Radar <\/em>in 2013,<em> <\/em>when asked about his decision to say no. \u201cI can go through a thread very easily which, by me turning Steve down led to me introducing him to Don Valentine, and he introduced him to Mike Markkula who is as responsible for Apple\u2019s success as Steve Woz[niak] and Jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">He\u2019s not the first tech boss to have missed out on billions\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Bushnell isn\u2019t the only one who missed out on critical business opportunities that would launch them into billionaire status\u2014there are even others who blew it on big deals with Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Ronald Wayne, the lesser-known third Apple cofounder, was also working at the electronics company Atari when he stepped up as Jobs\u2019 friend to help convince Wozniak of formalizing Apple\u2019s launch. Wayne even typed up the contract, penning that he would receive a 10% share in the tech company, while Jobs and Wozniak would each be awarded a 45% stake.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, less than two weeks after drafting up the document, Wayne sold his stake for just $800, also reaping $1,500 to forgo any claim to the company. Looking back, it\u2019s a massive misstep as his 10% share could now be worth between $75 billion and $300 billion today. His wasted opportunity isn\u2019t as stark as Bushnell\u2019s\u2014and the decision mainly came from a desire to have financial stability in his life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJobs and Woz didn\u2019t have two nickels to rub together,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ronald-wayne-third-founder-apple-computer-2017-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ronald-wayne-third-founder-apple-computer-2017-2\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">Wayne told<\/a> <em>Business Insider<\/em> in 2017. \u201cI, on the other hand, had a house, and a car, and a bank account\u2014which meant that I was on the hook if that thing blew up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>YouTube\u2019s cofounders, Chad Hurley, Steven Chen and Jawed Karim could also be sitting in a sizable nest egg today if they didn\u2019t sell their company so early.<\/p>\n<p>The YouTube creators sold their popular video platform to Google for $1.65 billion in fall 2006\u2014each receiving millions of dollars worth of stock. Hurley got company shares worth around $345 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/02\/07\/technology\/07cnd-google.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/02\/07\/technology\/07cnd-google.html\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">according to<\/a> <em>The New York Times<\/em>, while Chen accepted about $326 million worth. Karim, who left the business early to go back to school, got $64 million of shares. They were ecstatic about the deal in the beginning, but the buyer\u2019s remorse would potentially creep up less than 20 years later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today, YouTube is valued at $550 billion\u2014333 times higher than its market cap from nearly two decades prior, adjusted to inflation.
