Decades before the Artemis II mission, a group of astronauts experienced an Earth rising for the first time. This Earth Day, hear their story and the story of a photograph that changed the way we think about our place in the universe.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<dl class=\"css-p98d0w\">\n<dt class=\"css-xx7kwh\"\/>\n<dd class=\"css-4gvq6l\">\n<p class=\"css-8hvvyd\">We\u2019ve been spending all these revolutions looking at the moon. Then as we come around this uninviting place, we look up and there\u2019s the Earth. It\u2019s 240,000 miles away. It was small enough. You could cover it with your thumbnail. And everything we held dear \u2014 our families, our country \u2014 everything held dear was back on that blue planet. That was a sense of: How in the world could this little ball exist in this vast universe of nothing? The fact that the lunar horizon was so ugly and stark \u2014 that amplified the beauty of the Earth. \u201cWow, is that pretty!\u201d \u201cHand me a roll of color, quick.\u201d \u201cOh, man. That\u2019s great.\u201d \u201cWhere is it? Quick.\u201d We were all awestruck by the difference: the beauty of the Earth in its color against the blackness of space. \u201cOh, that\u2019s a beautiful shot.\u201d We had never had any discussion of taking an Earthrise picture before the flight or during the flight. And yet, when we came over the moon on this flight, we looked up and there was this beautiful blue ball in the background. It all struck us immediately. Get that picture. This is the best picture we\u2019ve got in the whole flight. It gave a contrast.
