BOCE CoastersBOCE Coasters

I have done many wine accessory reviews over the years, and one of my favorite accessories to review is wine aerators. I prefer my wines smooth and easy drinking, so an aerator often becomes necessary. I’ll take a sip of a freshly opened bottle of wine and make the determination if it needs aerating at all, and if so, how much aeration it needs to determine the particular wine aerator I’ll use.

I was approached about reviewing the BOĆE coaster (pronounced BOH-chay). It didn’t ring a bell at first by name, but when I saw what it was, I briefly remembered seeing the product on Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars, where Gordon Ramsey was skeptical about the coaster actually doing what it claimed.

I agreed to give them a try. Two BOĆE coasters were inside a burlap bag along with instructions. A two-page letter was also provided with more detailed instructions to ensure the product was tested correctly.

The claim is: “The BOĆE coaster uses 37 years of quantum physics expertise to enhance your beverage. Its frequencies transfer through glass, metal, and ceramic, delivering a smoother, richer flavor in just 3 minutes.” This quote came from founders Dr. Drew Karp and Peri Basel.

The patented quantum light technology will turn any drink set on the coaster into a better-tasting drink, whether that drink be wine, spirits, coffee, or even water. It is said to zap away the fusel oils that create bite and harshness. Hence, it was suggested to me to find a wine that was very tannic to see the best results. This was to be a bottle that hadn’t reached its maturity yet, or an inexpensive bottle of wine that has a lot of tannins.

I thought it would be better to have at least one other person help me test the product, so when Brenda came over, we put it to the test.

The Test

These were the instructions given, and these were followed for the test:

  • Pour the same beverage into two identical glasses
  • Place one glass on a BOĆE coaster for approximately three minutes.
  • Leave the other glass on the counter.
  • Smell the aroma of the BOĆE glass first, then compare.
  • Taste the BOĆE beverage first, then the untreated one.

That’s it, a fairly simple test. It was reinforced a couple of times to taste the BOĆE glass first.

California Red Wine

California Red Wine

First up was an inexpensive California red wine. We let the wine sit in the two glasses for the suggested three minutes.

Brenda did not notice any difference between the aroma and taste of the two glasses. I was very skeptical, but I think I tasted a very slight difference. That could have been the power of suggestion, though.

The power of suggestion is very strong. That’s one reason wine competitions are done blind. If we, as wine judges, taste a wine knowing who the producer is, it could give a false result. The same probably holds true here, and we should probably have done the test blind. The problem then is that one person would know which glass was the treated one.

Whiskey

Since the BOĆE claims to work with any beverage, we then tried a bourbon whiskey. This time we left it for five minutes.

Brenda did not see any difference. Again, I may have been crazy, but I think I could taste a very slight difference between the two.

More Tests

Those were the tests I did with Brenda. When I was writing this review, I decided to try a couple of other beverages. The product has been around for at least three years, and there have been some sommeliers who have claimed the product works. So, I had to try something else.

Coffee and BOCE CoasterCoffee and BOCE Coaster

Coffee

Coffee

I am not a big coffee drinker, and in fact, I didn’t start drinking coffee last year. I only drink it cold, and I prefer cold brew. In either case, it must have creamer added.

I put some cold brew in two glasses without creamer, set one of them on the BOĆE coaster, and waited 15 minutes. This time, I didn’t notice any difference in taste.

Fresh Aglianico

To put the BOĆE coaster to a difficult test, I selected an Aglianico that had been bottled within the past week. Since the wine was still experiencing bottle shock and displayed the firm tannins and youthful taste typical of Aglianico, it was suggested that when I received the bottle, I wait 10 months before drinking.

I prepared two glasses and waited seven minutes. I tasted the BOĆE glass, and it wasn’t that tannic. I was expecting the same from the untreated glass, but there were more tannins in that glass. Still doubtful, I had to compare them again, and it was still true with the difference.

Since I had been provided with two coasters, I put the untreated glass on the second coaster and waited three minutes. Then I compared the two wines again. That second glass had lost most of those tannins. Now, it could have just been sitting out those additional three minutes to the open air that could have done it, but there was definitely a difference regarding tannins.

Conclusion

Do the BOĆE coasters work? It appears this is a product that will have very subjective opinions, much like wine. Some people prefer one type of wine, and others do not care for that same wine. Some claim the product works, and others say it is a hoax. For the listing on Amazon at the time of this writing, there are actually 57% of the reviews that gave it 5 stars.

Will I continue to use the BOĆE coasters? Not in everyday use. But if I have friends over and we want to do a party trick, I may pull them out to do some wine comparisons. I did not see a discernible difference with other beverages to even think about using them for non-wine.

I have seen the BOĆE coasters on sale online at $24.95 for two of them. They are for sale on the BOĆE website, and Amazon sells them, too, for higher prices.

If you’re doubtful like I was, the only thing I can say is try it yourself. The company offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
